Garden Coaching and Garden Consultation

Garden Coaching and Garden Consultation

Gardening is part art, part science, requiring a creative partnership with nature. But that creative partnership can be equivalent to a chess game because there are so many variables and choices. Sometimes all that is needed is an experienced opinion to help you work through your next moves. Redbud's team of landscape architects, designers, and horticulture professionals can provide the expertise to help you achieve success with your garden.

In collaboration with our sister business, TEND landscape architects, we offer evaluation, coaching, and recommendations for your home landscape.

Garden Coaching

Garden Coaching offers personal attention designed to support you with your gardening questions and challenges. The service is offered in two ways to meet your needs. You can either schedule a Private Appointment at the nursery or schedule a Private Appointment in your garden.

For private coaching at the nursery Expand

One of Redbud's landscape designers will spend the time reviewing your site opportunities and constraints, then answering your specific questions to support stewarding your desired garden. We can then help you review plant options in the nursery yard. You are encouraged to take notes or record the visit for your reference. So you can get the most out of your garden coaching experience, we ask you to bring with you: Measurements of the garden area; Photos of the garden, both context and specific area for conversation; Understanding of sun/shade patterns and soil moisture; Images to convey your desired garden aesthetic.

For private coaching in your garden Expand

During the visit, one of Redbud's landscape designers will spend a portion of the time with you observing your landscape conditions, then we will spend the rest of the time answering your specific questions and providing support for your desired garden area or topic. Before our visit, we will ask you to provide some information about your garden so you can get the most out of your time with us. After the visit, we will be available for limited email correspondence to address any follow-up concerns or questions; if specific plants are recommended during coaching, assistance can be available at the nursery to locate and purchase those plants. Coaching does not include a written synopsis or design plan. You are encouraged to take notes or record the visit for your reference.

Fee Expand

Each Coaching option is based on an hourly rate of $150/hour. The private appointment in your garden adds a fee of $150 to the first hour to cover time and mileage of travel within 10 miles of the nursery. We can provide a quote for variation of visit time and travel distance.

Garden Consultation

Redbud Native Plant Nursery

A well-designed garden can turn an ordinary landscape into an outstanding one. Our Garden Design Consultations with experienced landscape designers help you assess what you already have and provide direction for achieving the garden that benefits your lifestyle and brings you joy.

When you request a consultation, we'll ask you to complete a Pre-visit Questionnaire —to be returned before our appointment for us to review in advance of the visit. During the scheduled appointment, we will meet you in your garden to walk the property, asking questions, taking photos and notes, and gathering all the information we will need for our recommendations. We will be looking at the landscape to observe and document the existing conditions, opportunities and constraints, site use, function, circulation, views, light patterns, arboriculture, hydrology, character of existing planting, lawn, invasive plants, maintenance and how your landscape is contributing to the ecosystem.

Learn More Expand

You are welcome to take notes or record the visit for your reference. After our visit, we will produce a digital report (provide view only, no download, link to examples) suitable for review on a screen or to print as 11" x 17" color sheets tailored to your space and expressed goals. Reports include our assessment and recommendations for improvements which may be conveyed through annotated site photos and sketches, precedent images, narrative description, and a suggested plant palette. Our feedback is based upon best practices for sustainable care of landscapes suited to preferences you express. After you receive the report, we will be available for limited email correspondence to address any follow-up concerns or questions.
We think of our reports as a guide, a roadmap to help prioritize and frame your next steps. While our reports are the beginning of any design process, they are not detailed planting designs. Initiating a design for a specific project can be a next step, discussed after you review your report. If you believe detailed design work may be necessary for you, a consultation is a great place to start a subsequent design process. See Garden Design section for more information.
Since no two landscapes are the same each consultation report is unique and site specific. Here are three examples (let’s talk through how best to show graphics with text) of our consultation reports. Together they provide an overview and range of the type of information addressed from design thinking to maintenance strategies. The examples have identifying and proprietary information obscured.

Fee: $700 Standard fee includes travel within 10 miles of Redbud. For locations beyond a 10-mile radius, we can provide a quote of additional fee to cover mileage and time for travel. Similarly, if the area for us to review is over one-half acre, we can provide a quote based on your site and specific needs.

Includes:

  • Pre-visit Questionnaire
  • One hour meeting in your garden, up to one half acre
  • Landscape Assessment and
  • Recommendation Report, generally 8-12 pages.
  • Limited follow up support by email

Garden Design

Garden design focuses on the art and process of imagining and documenting the layout, planting and details needed to implement a garden. If that seems overwhelming to you, this is our wheelhouse, let us help. Our landscape designers have formal training and professional experience in Landscape Architecture in addition to being gardeners themselves. We can assist you from the larger parsing of issues to be solved, to developing a program that will serve functional needs and aesthetic desires, then documents to implement improvements, including planting plans. Design is inherently custom or bespoke, it responds to you, your unique conditions, and budget.

Learn More Expand

Due to the individuality of each design project, the fee will be relative to the scope of tasks to address. Garden Design services begin with a conversation, and likely a site visit for us to form an appropriate proposal to fit your needs specifically and comprehensively.

Since no two landscapes are the same each design is unique and site specific. Here are examples (let’s talk through how best to show graphics with text) of residential garden designs we have produced. Together they provide an overview and range of the type of information addressed. The examples have identifying and proprietary information obscured.

Meet the Coaching and Consultation Team

Julie and Lisa are the owner/operators of Redbud and TEND landscape architects. Julie has a Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts from Tyler School of Art, Temple University, and a Master's in Landscape Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania. Julie is an ISA certified arborist. Lisa has a Bachelor's degree in Landscape Architecture from Purdue University and is a registered Landscape Architect in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

Julie and Lisa met and started working together on public landscapes at the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS). Residential landscapes have become more of their portfolio since taking on Redbud and learning from homeowners about the desire to transition conventional home gardens to be more than just pretty but to support all life, feed pollinators, sequester carbon, and work with water. They believe assisting private landowners is a significant way to counteract climate change and strengthen connections to the natural world.

Also on the team are Gretchen and Angie. Gretchen has worked with Julie and Lisa since their days at PHS. She has a Bachelor's and a Master's degree in Landscape Architecture from Cornell University. Angie has a Bachelor's degree in Digital Production and Communication from the State University of New York at New Paltz and is currently in the Master's program for Landscape Architecture at Temple University.
