Gardening is part art, part science, requiring a creative partnership with nature. But that creative partnership can be equivalent to a chess game because there are so many variables and choices. Sometimes all that is needed is an experienced opinion to help you work through your next moves. Redbud's team of landscape architects, designers, and horticulture professionals can provide the expertise to help you achieve success with your garden.
In collaboration with our sister business, TEND landscape architects, we offer evaluation, coaching, and recommendations for your home landscape.
Garden Coaching
Garden Coaching offers personal attention designed to support you with your gardening questions and challenges. The service is offered in two ways to meet your needs. You can either schedule a Private Appointment at the nursery or schedule a Private Appointment in your garden.
Garden Consultation
A well-designed garden can turn an ordinary landscape into an outstanding one. Our Garden Design Consultations with experienced landscape designers help you assess what you already have and provide direction for achieving the garden that benefits your lifestyle and brings you joy.
When you request a consultation, we'll ask you to complete a Pre-visit Questionnaire —to be returned before our appointment for us to review in advance of the visit. During the scheduled appointment, we will meet you in your garden to walk the property, asking questions, taking photos and notes, and gathering all the information we will need for our recommendations. We will be looking at the landscape to observe and document the existing conditions, opportunities and constraints, site use, function, circulation, views, light patterns, arboriculture, hydrology, character of existing planting, lawn, invasive plants, maintenance and how your landscape is contributing to the ecosystem.
Garden Design
Garden design focuses on the art and process of imagining and documenting the layout, planting and details needed to implement a garden. If that seems overwhelming to you, this is our wheelhouse, let us help. Our landscape designers have formal training and professional experience in Landscape Architecture in addition to being gardeners themselves. We can assist you from the larger parsing of issues to be solved, to developing a program that will serve functional needs and aesthetic desires, then documents to implement improvements, including planting plans. Design is inherently custom or bespoke, it responds to you, your unique conditions, and budget.
Meet the Coaching and Consultation Team
Julie and Lisa are the owner/operators of Redbud and TEND landscape architects. Julie has a Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts from Tyler School of Art, Temple University, and a Master's in Landscape Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania. Julie is an ISA certified arborist. Lisa has a Bachelor's degree in Landscape Architecture from Purdue University and is a registered Landscape Architect in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
Julie and Lisa met and started working together on public landscapes at the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS). Residential landscapes have become more of their portfolio since taking on Redbud and learning from homeowners about the desire to transition conventional home gardens to be more than just pretty but to support all life, feed pollinators, sequester carbon, and work with water. They believe assisting private landowners is a significant way to counteract climate change and strengthen connections to the natural world.
Also on the team are Gretchen and Angie. Gretchen has worked with Julie and Lisa since their days at PHS. She has a Bachelor's and a Master's degree in Landscape Architecture from Cornell University. Angie has a Bachelor's degree in Digital Production and Communication from the State University of New York at New Paltz and is currently in the Master's program for Landscape Architecture at Temple University.
