No need to worry about supply chain issues or delayed shipping times, Redbud is here for you with one more shopping opportunity, on Wednesday, December 15, from 3 to 7 pm.

The nursery is closed, but we will open our garden shop for in-person shopping of curated selection of books, tools, and gifts. We are stocked with books by our favorite authors and items we think you’ll love to give.

If you enjoyed our Yard Talks this fall, we have books by featured speakers including Andrew Bunting, Greg Tepper, Ruth Rogers Clausen, Eva Monheim, and Lisa Doseff. Did you happen to catch Kelly Johnson’s talk on Bird Migration? We have a number of birding books selected by Kelly in our shop.

November 20th: Yard Talks by Andrew Bunting

The nursery will close for the season on Saturday, November 20th, but we’re ending with a bang! Andrew Bunting will close out our Fall Yard Talk Series with two talks this Saturday.

We are open this week, Tuesday through Saturday, 10 – 5. We have plenty of trees, shrubs and perennials to add fall color to your landscape.

Eco Tips for the Fall Garden – Andrew will talk about his home garden in Swarthmore and how he uses ecologically friendly approaches to gardening in the fall. For example, he composts all organic matter at his home garden and makes intentional planting decisions to create habitat for pollinators, migrating birds, etc.

Grass to Gravel: Eliminating Lawn in Your Garden – Over the last two years Andrew has been in the process of most removing most of his front lawn to install a gravel garden. Gravel gardening has started to become more and more popular in the United States. It is a type of xeriscaping that involves adding certain types of plants that will require literally no watering once established.

Andrew Bunting is the Vice President of Public Horticulture at the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society. He previously served as Vice President of Horticulture and Collections at the Atlanta Botanical Garden. Andrew was Assistant Director of the Garden and Director of Plant Collections at the Chicago Botanic Garden. For 27 years he was Curator at the Scott Arboretum at Swarthmore College. He has published over 200 articles in American Gardener, Arnoldia, The Hybrid, Fine Gardening,The Magnolia Society Journal, Green Scene and Organic Gardening. He lectures extensively in the United States, and abroad. Andrew has participated in plant expeditions to China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Japan and South Africa. His home garden, Belvidere, in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania has been featured in This Old House Magazine and in the Wall Street Journal.

Join us for our 2nd annual Winter Market:
Saturday and Sunday, November 27 & 28,
and again on December 4 & 5, from 10a – 4p. Pick up winter greens, cut stems, decorated wreaths – or make your own!
Talks, book signings and demonstrations both weekends.

Yard Talk November 6th: Deer and Your Garden

This Saturday, November 6, join us for talks in the nursery yard, at 11:00 am and again at 1:00 pm.

“Will Deer Eat This?” is a familiar question at the nursery, and a very practical concern for many gardeners. Join us to hear from Gregg Tepper and Ruth Rogers Clausen, authors of Deer Resistant Native Plants for the Northeast who will address this question and talk about ways to manage deer in your garden. Bring your questions!

Gregg and Ruth will sign copies of their book after the talks (books available at the Redbud shop.)

Gregg Tepper is a professional horticulturist, lecturer, consultant, and lifelong native plant enthusiast. He is currently horticulturist at the Arboretum at Laurel Hill and West Laurel Hill Cemeteries in Philadelphia, PA. where he manages various display gardens including Nature’s Sanctuary, a SITES Gold credited landscape. Gregg previously held the positions of director of horticulture at Mt. Cuba Center in Hockessin DE and the director of horticulture and board members at the Delaware Botanic Gardens in Dagsboro, DE.

Ruth Rogers Clausen is the author of 50 Beautiful Deer-Resistant Plants and co-author of Essential Perennials and The Proven Winners Garden Book. She received a Quill and Trowel award from the Garden Communicators International and has written for the American Garden Guides series. She is the former horticulture editor for Country Living Garden magazine and a long-tie contributor to County Gardens magazine. Ruth Lectures widely and in 2017 was awarded the Garden Media Award by the Perennial Plant Association.

Eva Monheim Talk and Book Signing: October 30th

Join us for talks and book signing by Eva Monheim on Saturday, October 30!

Let the Shrubs Do Their Work: Did you know that shrubs have jobs just like people do? They can be specialists or generalists. Generalist shrubs can handle a range of extremes from wet to dry. Specialist shrubs like it either moist or dry. This talk will cover plants that like water and do great when they are situated along a stream or in an area that periodically floods.

Pruning Shrubs and Hedges: Every shrub has its own characteristics, some are weepers, others are rounded, pyramidal, or vase shaped. If you know the natural form of the shrub before you begin pruning, you can enhance its shape. No meatballs please! Eva Monheim will show proper pruning techniques and an array of tools that are best for pruning.

Following both talks, Eva will sign her book Shrubs & Hedges (books available for purchase at the Redbud shop.)

Redbud’s Julie Snell Interviewed on the Plant a Trillion Trees Podcast

Interview with Redbud co-owner Julie Snell, on the Plant A Trillion Trees podcast hosted by Eva Monheim, Verdant Earth Educators and Hal Rosner, ISA Board Certified Master Arborist.

The purpose of our podcast is to encourage tree planting and proper tree care for our urban forest which includes neighborhoods, parks, and other open spaces. We will also cover the importance of already established trees and their benefits. The show is hosted by Eva Monheim and Hal Rosner certified arborists through the International Society of Arboriculture.
